Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Orthotist? An Orthotist is an HCPC Registered health professional specializing in the assessment of the
whole body for biomechanical problems, and if appropriate prescribe, measure and fit an Orthosis.

What is an Orthosis? An externally applied device, brace, splint or insoles designed to improve function, reduce pain or prevent or help deformity.

What is involved in an assessment? I offer 2 types of clinical assessment in clinic.

A Clinical Orthotic Assessment will involve a thorough clinical history taking, anatomical assessment, if relevant some functional movement patterns and visual walking assessment, as well as a dynamic gait analysis if appropriate.

If you book a Clinical Orthotic Assessment with Video Gait Analysis it will also include a slow motion video analysis of you walking or running on the Treadmill.

Do you just do insoles? No, I can measure and fit any type of brace. If my website doesn’t show it please enquire.

Why shouldn’t I just buy them over the internet or in a shop? Much like any medicine, you need the right prescription for the right problem. By seeking out expert help and advice you can reduce on time and money wasted on unsuitable items.

What does the Dynamic Foot Pressure Scanner do? The footscan technology enables me to take dynamic foot pressures of you walking or running as part of my assessment

Do I have to buy anything there and then? You are under no pressure to buy any insoles or braces from me. After your assessment I will make some recommendations and you can either go ahead there and then or contact me afterwards if you need time. On the other hand if I don’t think that Orthotic treatment is the right way for, I will advise you on the best way forward for you.

Is it supplied the same day? I do keep a small stock of insoles and braces in clinic so it may be possible to supply some on the same day. Otherwise I will make a further appointment for them to be fitted. I allow 3 weeks on average for custom made insoles to be made.

How much does an assessment cost? A Clinical Orthotic Assessment currently costs £80 for a 45 minute assessment. If you would also like video gait analysis it will cast £120 for 1 hour 15 minutes.

Can I bring someone with me? Absolutely, there is plenty of room within clinic but obviously if you need to bring children with you feel free to bring them something to keep them entertained

Is the clinic wheelchair accessible? Yes it is, although you may need to park right up to the entrance pathway

Is there a disabled toilet? Yes there is

What do I wear? Please wear either shorts or loose fitting trousers for the assessment. If you are attending for video gait analysis please also wear or bring your trainers or walking shoes with you.

What happens if I miss my appointment? If you are unable to attend your appointment please try and contact me and let me know as soon as possible. If you miss your appointment I will contact you to re-arrange it but if you miss more than one appointment you may not get another or may be charged for the clinic time.

Do you do home visits? Yes home visits can be arranged and are costed individually depending on location
